Thermador steam oven not making steam
The oven heats but never produces steam, or the cycle stops early

2 years on the whole appliance, up to 12 on the sealed system
Coverage is counted from the day the appliance was delivered, not the day it was installed or first switched on.
Every new Thermador, from ranges, ovens, cooktops and hoods to coffee machines, refrigeration and dishwashers, comes with a 2-year limited warranty under which Thermador pays for both the parts and the labor on the whole appliance. Built-in refrigerators carry a second, longer layer on the sealed cooling system that reaches into year 12. Whether a repair gets paid for depends on the age counted from delivery, which component failed, and whether it is a defect or damage.
The written statement in the Pro Grand and Pro Harmony range guide sets the term at 730 days, counted from the date the appliance was originally delivered. That is not the day it was installed or first switched on. In new construction a range can sit crated in a garage for months while cabinets go in, and those weeks come off the two years. Keep the delivery ticket with the use-and-care book.
Cosmetic problems run on a far shorter clock. Scratches in the stainless, porcelain blemishes, chips and dents are covered for only 60 days, so open every door in the first week, look closely with a flashlight and photograph anything you find.
Built-in Thermador refrigerators get extra cover on the sealed system: the compressor, evaporator, condenser, the dryer/strainer and the tubing that joins them. In years 3 through 6 a sealed-system failure is covered for parts and labor. From year 7 through year 12 the cover narrows to parts only, so the labor becomes your bill. Stainless rust-through is covered for parts for life.
Fans, controls, door gaskets and the ice maker are not on that list, so after year two they are ordinary repairs. A column running warm because a fan quit is a different claim from one with a dead compressor, which is why the cause gets pinned down first. Out of warranty, sealed-system work on a column typically falls in the $920–$2,400 range, with the firm figure given after diagnosis.
| Age, from delivery | What the written cover says | Left for you to pay |
|---|---|---|
| First 60 days | Cosmetic defects, plus everything below | Nothing for a covered defect |
| Up to 2 years | Whole appliance, parts and labor | Nothing for a covered defect |
| Years 3 to 6 | Refrigeration sealed system, parts and labor | Every other repair |
| Years 7 to 12 | Refrigeration sealed system, parts only | Labor, and every other repair |
| For life | Stainless rust-through on built-in refrigeration, parts only | Labor |
Many owners assume an outside technician ends the warranty. Thermador’s own range warranty statement says otherwise: hiring a repair shop with no Thermador affiliation, or fitting third-party parts, does not void it. The catch sits in the same passage. If outside work causes damage, Thermador takes no responsibility for that damage.
So inside the first two years, a covered defect repaired through Thermador’s own service network costs you nothing; start there. Clayfield Appliance Service is an independent shop, and the honest advice is to use the cover you already have. Once it has run out, or the fault is plainly not a defect, the choice of technician is yours, and our diagnostic is $80.
An extended plan bought from a retailer or another company is a separate contract with its own rules on who repairs and what counts; it does not change Thermador’s written terms.
Genuine OEM parts are built for your exact appliance; aftermarket parts are built to fit a family of them. On a gas valve or a control board, a near match can work for a while and then fail in ways that are hard to trace, and if it damages something else, that damage is yours. Matching starts with two numbers, not the badge.
Thermador ranges and ovens carry a rating plate showing the model number, marked E-Nr., and the production number, marked FD. A Pro Grand or Pro Harmony range keeps it either behind the kick plate or over the main oven cavity, which varies by model. On Masterpiece wall ovens and steam ovens, open the door and check the left side of the door trim. The FD matters because parts change between production runs of one E-Nr. How that plays out when ordering is covered in parts, serial numbers and lead times.
Filters, descaler and cleaners are wear items you buy. For freezer columns and bottom-freezer models, Thermador names the Freedom Water Filter, REPLFLTR55, as the replacement. The MEDS301WS and MEDS302WS Masterpiece steam ovens take descaler powder 00573828 or descaler liquid 10008170, and test strips 00056317 show how hard your water is. Descaling runs about 70 to 90 minutes on 3½ cups (800 ml) of water plus 200 ml of descaler.
Thermador recommends its Stainless Steel Conditioner, part 00576697, wiped with the grain, and warns that cleansers containing chlorine or chlorine compounds corrode stainless steel. Orange Park sits on the St. Johns River and stays damp much of the year, so surfaces get wiped often; a bleach spray grabbed out of habit causes damage, not a defect.
$80 covers the diagnosis, and it is taken off the total if you decide to go ahead. Past that the figure is set by which component has actually failed, and the rows below are where the work this page describes has been settling. Nobody here quotes one number before the panel is off.
| What has failed | Parts and labor |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit | $80 flat |
| Igniter, spark module or surface element | $210–$490 |
| Oven thermostat or temperature sensor | $180–$560 |
| Bake or broil element | $210–$580 |
| Convection fan or motor | $260–$670 |
| Control board or touch panel | $440–$1,010 |
| Door hinge, glass or seal | $180–$680 |
| Refrigeration column sealed system | $920–$2,400 |
A comparable Thermador wall oven, rangetop or column, appliance only — before delivery, installation or cabinetry. National appliance pricing, not Florida labour.
| New appliance | Appliance only |
|---|---|
| Wall oven, the usual repair-or-replace comparison | $4,200–$9,500 |
| Professional rangetop or range | $5,500–$14,500 |
Ranges, not quotes. The width of a band is mostly access: a component reached from the front is one job, and the same component behind an appliance that has to come out of its opening is quite another. How a job is priced.
The oven heats but never produces steam, or the cycle stops early
The oven is not heating up: it preheats slowly, runs cool, or never reaches the set temperature
A zone beeps, flashes and shuts off, or will not detect the pan at all
The column runs but is not cooling: the cabinet drifts warm, or one section cools while the other does not
The dishwasher is not draining: water is standing in the bottom of the tub at the end of the cycle
That a model name is enough to order a part, and that every repair either happens on the first visit or does not happen at all.
That a repair is priced by the size or the age of the appliance, rather than by which single component inside it has actually failed.
That a gas burner which glows or clicks without lighting always needs a new igniter, when a damp tip, a crooked cap or a tripped breaker gives the same symptom.
